Teaching Early Reading More Successfully (TERMS)

What is the Course About?

The course is for teachers of students:

  • in the critical early years of schooling (K-2);
  • nd students experiencing difficulties in learning to read.

The aim of the course is to assist teachers to increase their skills in the teaching of early reading, and thus improve literacy outcomes for students. The course will identify components of an early reading program and present effective research-based teaching strategies.
Content:

  • A Contemporary View of Reading;
  • Components of Effective Reading Instruction;
  • Teaching the Prerequisites;
  • Teaching Word Identification;
  • Reading for Meaning;
  • Putting it all Together.
How Will the Course Be Presented?  

The course is available in both face-to-face and distance mode. It consists of six interrelated units, each presented in a two-hour session or forwarded to distance participants at fortnightly intervals. Participants will receive notes for each unit together with a textbook. Completion of five between-session activities is a component of the course.

For those unable to access the face-to-face courses, the distance mode provides a very flexible professional development opportunity.

Outcomes of the Course:

As a result of participating in this course it is expected that teachers will gain:

  • insight into contemporary reading research;
  • the opportunity to enhance effective teaching strategies;
  • understanding about those components of an early reading program which underpin future reading success;
  • familiarity with an instructional model appropriate to teaching early reading

Course 3 : 5th, 12th, 26th June, 24th July, 7th & 21st August
Course 4 : 26th July, 2nd, 9th, 16th & 30th August

Course 4 : International Grammar School, 4-8 Kelly Street, Ultimo.

Target Group: Teachers of years K-2, Literacy/Reading Support Teachers K-6.

Cost:

$425 per participant (including GST)
AIS member $325
Includes course folder, unit notes and text book.
Eligible teachers will be able to apply at the course for a $100 per course subsidy through the QTP (see calendar)
Cancellations should be in writing no later than one week prior to course to enable a refund.
Your registration will be confirmed by fax after closing date.

Certification: Certificates will be made available to all participants who fulfil the course requirements.
Please note: AIS Professional Development courses can be accumulated to apply for University accreditation.
Closing Date: One week before chosen course.
