Researching Primary Science:
The Digital Way

What is the Course About?

Are you excited about using the Internet and Multimedia to help students research topics in Science? Are you sometimes disappointed with the results of your student's research? This course will equip you and your students with the skills necessary to successfully negotiate this new multi-modal environment focusing on the use of the Internet and Science based CD–ROMS.

Whilst digital technology presents students with infinite possibilities as a research tool it also brings with it a new set of challenges for teachers and students to master. If students are to maximize the potential of this new resource they will need support in learning how to search the Internet efficiently and how to effectively utilize the information they discover.

The role of visual images in new electronic texts is becoming increasingly important. Recent research suggests that in order for students to become effective users of new multi–modal texts teachers will need to provide students with specific visual literacy skills. This course will explore the role of visual images in Internet research and introduce participants to the teaching of visual literacy skills.

How Will the Course Be Presented?

The day will be divided into two sessions. The first session will consist of exploring issues surrounding current research on the effect of digital technology on the teaching of Science.

The second session will involve participants in a practical exploration of the World Wide Web and/or CD-ROMS. It is suggested that participants bring a topic they are interested in researching to use in this session.

Outcomes of the Course:

As a result of participating in this course it is expected that teachers will gain:

  • practical experience locating scientific information using the Internet and CD-ROMs;
  • an introduction to the teaching of visual literacy skills;
  • knowledge on how to engage students in the information process using digital technology.
