Executive Leadership in the Secondary School

What is the Course About?

This repeat 2 day course is designed to assist school Heads, Deputies and Directors of Studies in secondary schools to build school environments more amenable to improvement and change. While schools face ever increasing pressures, change efforts can be seen as problematic by busy staff and managers, in part through concerns that they will be expected to do even more. The course explores approaches to leading change and school improvement in ways that build involvement and support.

Specific topics to be examined include:

  • Leadership as distinct from management at executive level.
  • Developing a shared vision for the school.
  • Understanding resistance to change.
  • Strategies for building momentum for change.
  • Developing teamwork with, and among, faculty heads.
How Will the Course Be Presented?

This is a workshop style course with an emphasis on participants learning from each other through group discussion and exercises. The presenter will contribute frameworks and tools to ensure a focussed and well structured program. Participants will be asked, as pre-work, to identify and document case examples of their efforts to introduce or manage change where the result was less than completely positive.

This course is a companion program to the Leading Your Faculty course for Heads of Faculty. It includes an 360o Feedback Survey designed to enable school managers to obtain anonymous and confidential team member feedback and to explore its implications in a safe setting.

Outcomes of the Course:

As a result of participating in this course it is expected that participants will gain:

  • skills in building a sense of common purpose and direction among all members of the school community;
  • skills in dealing productively with resistance;
  • confidence in building & sustaining momentum for change;
  • insights into ways of working more collaboratively with other managers and staff to foster change and improvement.
