Leading Your Faculty

What is the Course About?

This three day course is designed specifically to meet the management and leadership challenges of the Head of Department role.

Day 1 - The Changing Role of the Head of Faculty

This period of constant educational change requires many different skills and qualities of faculty heads from those traditionally valued. Fortunately, many of these skills can be learned and practised. This module focuses on the following areas:

  • Defining the role of the head of faculty.
  • Clarifying and communicating a vision for the faculty within the school's overall direction.
  • Managing performance (with staff who have plateaued or are negative).
  • Coaching skills to facilitate team effectiveness.

Day 2 - Supporting School Change

Heads of Department and other school managers are increasingly expected to be teachers and managers of change, a role which poses special - and sometimes conflicting - challenges. On the one hand is the need to build staff support for change and to deal with resistance when it arises. On the other hand, the wish is to engage with school executives about aspects of the change and implementation. This course is aimed at helping HODs to more effectively support and influence school change - both up and down the line.

Day 3 - You and Your Team: Feedback and Strategies

Developing one's effectiveness as a team leader implies the need to gain feedback from team members on strengths and weaknesses, and then set about making improvements in identified areas. The problem is that most school managers receive little direct feedback from their members. This course is designed to enable school managers to obtain anonymous and confidential team member feedback and to explore its implications in a safe setting.
