Reading the Media

What is the Course About?

This one day course has been updated to include a focus on the structure of various media texts drawing on a functional model of language. Through workshop activities, participants will be provided with a framework to critically analyse visual texts in different mediums. The differences between radio, television and print media will also be explored using examples from radio and television news and newspapers.

Course Outline:

Session 1 Examining the structures of news in print media
Session 2 Looks at media images in advertising
Session 3 Relating images and text in different media: comparing a story in print, on radio and TV.

How Will the Course Be Presented?

This course will be presented in a one day workshop which uses written, aural and visual texts as a means of critically ‘reading' the media. This workshop will also provide opportunities for teachers to consider how best to support students to acquire skills in critically ‘reading' the media in the classroom.

Outcomes of the Conference

As a result of participating in this course it is expected that teachers will gain:

  • knowledge of the language patterns of the news media;
  • knowledge of a framework for ‘reading' visual images in still and moving images;
  • confidence and skills in assisting students to read and write critically about media in the English Key Learning Area.
