Literacy Across the KLA's

There has been a significant focus on literacy over the last few years particularly as a result of the impact of the Primary English syllabus and the new Stage 4 and 5 History and Geography syllabuses which have a significant focus on the development of subject specific literacy. The Association of Independent Schools has attempted to support teachers in understanding the different literacy demands that are relevant to specific subject areas and in developing appropriate classroom strategies which include a literacy focus in mainstream classes.

Literacy: A Key to History and Literacy: A Key to Geography are presented each year to support teachers in understanding the literacy demands of Stages 4 and 5.

Literacy in Year 11 Business Studies focuses on understanding the literacy demands and text types of Business Studies in preparation for the New HSC.

Reading the Media explores the structure of media texts and ways to critically ‘read' visual and print texts in newspapers and television.

All these courses will be offered again in 2001. New courses this year will include:

Responding to a Reading Task explores how to help students to examine the grammatical resources which combine to create complex text.

Practical classroom strategies to support students’ learning are a key element of all these courses.

Through these literacy based subject area courses teachers will explore how they can help their students to use language appropriately in their subject area by including a language focus into their teaching. It will also emphasise the need for a consistent language focus across the school.

As well as advertised Professional Development courses, Literacy across the KLAs course which focuses on literacy demands across the curriculum can be presented to whole teaching staff of a school, particular faculty groups or to small group of representatives from across the school. This course is most successful when it is supported by the ongoing involvement of the presenter, working to support teachers over time.

The course can include the following modules:

Introducing an Approach to Literacy
Describing Text-Types
Language in the Classroom
Talking to Learn
Reading to Learn
Planning for Literacy
